It's Dark Out- Be the Light

Devotional by Laurissa Moore

“The sun will no more be your light by day, nor will the brightness of the moon shine on you,
for the LORD will be your everlasting light, and your God will be your glory. Your sun will never
set again, and your moon will wane no more; the LORD will be your everlasting light, and your
days of sorrow will end.”
Isaiah 60:19-20 NIV

Isaiah 60 paints the picture of the glorious reign of Jesus in the new heaven and the new earth. This will occur after the thick and desperate darkness described in Isaiah 59. The glory of God will be our eternal light and we will be immersed in His splendor. There will be no more sorrow and no more grieving. There will be no need for the light of the sun or moon because the Lord will be our everlasting light! Oh, what a day when the Messiah comes!

While we eagerly await this glorious day, there is work to be done here on earth. Currently the world lives in spiritual darkness; however, to those who are redeemed and call Jesus Lord and Savior, we walk in the light. We have been rescued from the darkness from our Redeemer! God tells His people to respond to the light. He tells us to arise and shine. Darkness is for lying down and sleeping; light is for rising up and shining. Sometimes harsh, bright light can be disturbing and uncomfortable to look at, but this light will be wonderful and warm, pulsating from the glory of the Lord. People will see your light and be attracted to it. Just as important as having the Lord as your everlasting light is having God as your glory and to glory in nothing or no one else. As children of the light, we have a responsibility to shine our light in the darkplaces. It’s dark out there; be the light.

If I have the ability to bring spiritual light to the unredeemed people of the world, what does it look like to shine my light in my neighborhood? What does it look like to shine my light in my workplace? What does it look like to shine my light in my family?
