Processing Light

Devotional by Amy Jones

“9 This was the true Light that, coming into the world, enlightens every person. 10 He was in the world, and the world came into being through Him, and yet the world did not know Him. 11 He came to His own, and His own people did not accept Him. 12 But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name, 13 who were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of a man, but of God.

14 And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us; and we saw His glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.”

John 1:9-14

There are different ways our eyes process light. If you are in a dark room and there is one small light, say from a phone charger or even a light outside the window, your eyes will be drawn to it immediately. However, If you are in a dark room and someone turns on the overhead light, your eyes will squint and the muscles around your eyes might even hurt for a brief moment before your eyes adjust to the flood of light.

We see in these verses that Jesus is called the true light and that He gives light to every man. He was not received well by some - almost as if they were asleep and a flood of light came into a dark room and their eyes had to close because it hurt. But others were drawn to him, as if they were in a dark room and their eyes open and searching for the light. We can choose to keep our eyes open and look for the light, or we can choose to stop looking and miss it.

Verse 14 tells us that He is full of grace and truth. That is the kind of light that fills our souls- it’s not the kind of light we want to miss! Let’s keep our eyes open for His light- let’s keep talking to Him, reading His Word, thanking Him for all He is doing, and worshiping together. Ephesians 5:15-17 tells us to “Be very careful then, how you live- not as unwise but as wise, making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil. Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord’s will is.”Let’s keep our eyes open because the Light is here!

Consider: How do you respond to the light? Are your eyes open and waiting, or when the light comes does it
