Let There Be Light

Devotional Poem by Megan Doan

“In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was without form and void, and darkness was over the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters. And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. And God saw that the light was good. And God separated the light from the darkness. God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And there was evening and there was morning, the first day.”

Genesis 1:1-5

And God said, “Let there be light,” and out of the darkness electromagnetic radiation burst forth at a command. Its nature took scientists years to understand.

Now known to be made of particles and waves, with different colors emitting at various wavelengths, we get to behold all this that God has made.

By it we can see, plants can grow, when it hits the clouds just right, it refracts to create a rainbow.

A foundational constant of the universe is its speed. Light is a beautiful something we need.

As we meditate on light, we also get glimpses of its creator’s identity. He is Holy, He is our Hope and He wants us to see.

God separates the light from the darkness leaving a shadow of reality; He, like no other, is set apart, Holy.

God creates light after darkness, there is evening and then there is morning; He is our Hope that we, once dead, can now have life. He is our Hope that shines in the midst of suffering.

God called this light good, light that by its nature causes sight; He wants us to see Him and His goodness, to see Him aright.

Like the sun emanating with intensity, we see a God who gives us Himself endlessly.

I read a book recently that describes it fittingly: the eternal love of the Father, Son, and Spirit radiates from Himself to you and me.

As we continue to read through Scripture passages about light, approaching the day we celebrate the birth of Christ, let’s pause for a minute today to search our hearts and pray.

Do you see? Who is it that you see? May God illuminate our hearts and minds to know and love who He is, truly.
