How to Join God’s Harvest: Making Disciples and Embracing the Mission
Life often brings us to moments where we feel completely out of our depth—overwhelmed by new challenges, responsibilities, or opportunities that seem far beyond our abilities. Yet, in those moments, we can find purpose by stepping into God’s greater plan: joining Him in His mission to reach the world. Click the video link above for the full message.
God’s Heart for the Harvest
The Bible describes God as a farmer who deeply loves the harvest. The harvest represents people—individuals who are separated from God and waiting to encounter His love and grace. In John 3:16, we see the core of God’s mission: “For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.” God’s love for humanity drove Him to send Jesus into the world, not just to live among us but to rescue us. Jesus carried this mission forward, not only through His life and sacrifice but by empowering His followers to continue His work. And now, the responsibility has passed to us.
What Does It Mean to Be a Disciple?
A disciple is someone who follows Jesus, learns from Him, and is transformed by Him. But discipleship doesn’t stop there—it includes joining Jesus in His mission to make more disciples. This process mirrors how Jesus made disciples: He sought out people and built relationships with them. He spent time with them, teaching and guiding them. Their lives were transformed as they grew closer to Him. They joined His mission and shared His message with others. Jesus said, “As the Father has sent me, I am sending you” (John 20:21). Becoming a disciple means stepping into this calling—living with the same love and purpose that Jesus demonstrated.
The Four Fields of Discipleship
In Mark 4:26-29, Jesus compares the kingdom of God to a farmer scattering seed in different fields. This image helps us understand how we can engage in discipleship in practical ways.
The Empty Field
The empty field represents people who don’t yet know Jesus. They may seem like they have everything together, but they lack the fullness of life that only comes through a relationship with Him. To reach people in the empty field, you must go and pray. Build relationships with those who don’t yet know Jesus. Engage with people at work, in your neighborhood, or through shared activities. Begin by praying for them. Even before sharing your faith, pray that God would open their hearts and prepare the way.
The Seeded Field
Once relationships are established, it’s time to plant seeds. This involves sharing your story and the story of Jesus. Sharing your story doesn’t require expertise—it simply involves being honest about your journey. Think of it in three parts: life before Jesus, how you met Jesus, and life after Jesus. Sharing His story is just as important. Scriptures like John 3:16 provide a simple and clear way to explain who Jesus is and why He matters.
The Growing Field
As people respond to Jesus, the growing field represents the process of spiritual growth. This is where discipleship happens. Discipleship involves walking alongside someone as they grow in faith. Practical ways to disciple others include reading Scripture together and discussing its meaning, asking questions like “What does this passage tell us about God?” or “What does it reveal about people?” and praying together while encouraging them to live out their faith.
The Harvest Field
The harvest field is the ultimate goal—seeing disciples become disciple-makers. As people grow in faith, they begin to share Jesus with others, continuing the cycle of discipleship. Jesus told His followers in Acts 1:8, “You will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” This means sharing the gospel both locally and globally.
Overcoming Doubts and Fears
Stepping into discipleship can feel intimidating. You may wonder, “How can I make a difference?” or “What if I don’t have all the answers?” But God doesn’t ask for perfection—He asks for willingness. Like a child stepping onto a tractor for the first time, our role is simply to say yes to God’s invitation. He provides the power and direction. The Holy Spirit equips us with the wisdom and strength we need to fulfill His mission.
Call to Action
Where is God calling you to join the harvest? Take a moment to reflect on the people in your life—neighbors, coworkers, friends, or family members—who might be in an “empty field.” Start by praying for them and asking God to show you opportunities to connect with them. If you’ve already planted seeds, consider how you can nurture growth. Invite someone to read Scripture with you, join a small group, or attend church.
